Why are batteries working better than my power supply (ham radio)?

The AC adapter should work better than battery voltage because the supply doesn't change with use. I suspect a problem with the AC converter jack in the radio. Check for corrosion/dirt in the jack or wiring inside the radio. It is possible that your radio isn't compatible with the converter because of some weird design parameter. Check with the radio manufacturer for AC adapter requirements if it isn't the original adapter.
