Watch abc family without cable?

People are saying you can only watch abc family if you have cable but i never had cable, just a converter box and the other day i was able to get the channel, but now i cant find it. Does anyone know what channel abc family is with a converter box, (if you want it more specific, in california) or wihtout cable?
