Help with pullin horses mane. ?

I prefer 6 inches but thats just me. I think it should be like 4 inches(?) before you plait it. I don't like wetting the mane but once again that's just me. So after each time you do this you will get your opinions on what you do (say wet the mane or have the mane 7 inches...)
